A Brief Encounter - Preston - 26th September 2017

One Voice Community Choir

An extravaganza of light, sound and performance art

On a warm Saturday evening, One Voice Community Choir were proud to be part of Preston's Brief Encounter, a four hour event held in Preston city centre. Live music & art installations combined to mark the interval year before the Lancashire Encounter Biennial returns next year. The atmosphere was electric. The hustle & bustle and quirky entertainment gave the event a festival feel.

Singing on the balcony of the Harris Museum gallery, the acoustics resonated, not only with songs from the Choir but a myriad of artists and cultures. The Choir sang two forty five minute sets & had a lively, enthusiastic crowd each time. The Choir sang a mixture of uplifting gospel and inspirational songs, including old favourites such as Swing Low Sweet Chariot, Glory Glory Hallelujah, Can You Feel it & One Love. A moving a capella song "Steal Away", resonated beautifully around the circular gallery.

In between performances, choir members were able to enjoy the impressive light procession which included an enormous illuminated giant. They were also able to take part in an array of workshops such as Chinese brush painting, lindy hop and South Asian arts.

The second performance by the Choir concluded with our longest ever rendition of Oh Happy Day, which had everyone dancing and clapping in the gallery. The atmosphere was uplifting and joyful and we were proud to represent our wonderful and diverse city in this inspiring event.

As always our thanks to Tyndale Thomas MBE, our musical director, our lovely soloists, Preston City Council, who organised the event, the Harris Musem for hosting us and of course, as always, the people of our community who we are proud to represent.
